FRESH FINDS - THE NYC EDITION

Happy sunny Saturday everyone!  It's Derby Day, the sun is shining + we're open til 5 today, so please stop by! I just returned from an impromptu NYC birthday trip, so today's finds are all inspired by Spring in that never-sleepy city.

Sex + Ice Cream

Before we get started, wanted to remind you all that the famous KC shop, Sex + Ice Cream premiers their DSM location this tonite at 6! Follow @sex.icecream IG or on FB for details/photos. Congrats to Nicole Leth + staff - so stoked! Photo: @hotmarge

DRINKS + EATS - this trip, we ate and drank our way across the city. Here's a quick list of some of the places we visited.

SABBIA ON THE ROOF

We spent a lazy, hot Friday afternoon at Eataly Flatiron's Sabbia On The Roof - an Italian seaside-themed restaurant + bar. The roof opens to let in the sunshine, the umbrellas and upturned parasols create shadows + dancing light - you really get the seaside holiday vibe - especially since seemingly no one in NYC works Fri afternoons. We downed a giant plate of raw oysters while we sipped the delicious Aperol Spritz, which our bartender made with fake agnst, explaining that everyone would order them as soon as they saw our beautiful orange cocktails. Saluti!

PROLETARIAT

If your feet have had enough, take a few more steps into this awesome little East Village joint. They carry a cool selection of beers you probably haven't tried, yet, in a friendly, no frills space. The front window-side space offers people watching at its best.

TAQUERIA DOWNTOWN

We stayed in Hoboken (my fave little North Jersey city) + made our way over to Jersey City for supper one night. Rolled up on Taqueria + a healthy line of diners waiting outside. Don't be put off, the wait isn't long + the payoff's worth it. The space is small, but you'll fit right in. They've got a fun 80's vibe going on + classic movies play on the TV. While we ate, we made fun of Top Gun's pointless shirtless beach volleyball match - oh, 80's!  Try their lamb Barbacoa tacos, and be sure! to get a chorizo one - maybe the best chorizo I've ever had.

MANITOBA'S

A 35-year-old punk institution nestled in Alphabet City just off Tompkins Square Park. 2-for-1 happy hour, great music and a ton of graffiti. A bit of history: Dick Manitoba (singer MC5, The Dictators) dreamed of opening this bar after visiting prize fighter Jack Dempsey's Bronx bar as a kid.

MOMOFUKU SSÄM

Get here early for lunch or dinner - it tends to fill up fast. The menu changes frequently, but they post it online. reasonably-priced + absolutely delicious. We tried the pork belly bun (pictured), uni w/lychee foam, the so-good-I'm-still-thinking-about-them Chinese long beans, and Gochu glazed Pork Ribs. I'd highly recommend their house cocktails, too. They have sharing menus for larger groups, too. Modern + casual, relaxing and fun.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

NYC MURALS

This one's in Jersey City, the Biggie one above taken by @bry1276 is at St. John's + Underhill in Brklyn, + the Warhol/MJ mural by @sacsix is also in Brklyn and also shot by @bry1276 - the city's covered in them! Get hints by searching the #nycmurals IG tag or do a little Googling. Drop pins on your Google maps + clear your schedule!

GRAND CENTRAL STATION

If you're looking for monuments to industry, it's easy to overlook NYC's Grand central Station. This is my go-to side trip for kids - usually around lunchtime because the lower level houses a massive food court, including the popular Shake Shack burger joint - a great burger for your bucks. Whisper in the corners near the Oyster Bar for a quick sound travel experiment, then go in and behold the beautiful architecture surrounding their gorgeous Saarinen tables and chairs. I don't necessarily recommend their menu, but they're oysters are great - they have happy hour M-Sat + you can slurp all you can eat for about a $1 each.
